Roy E. Radu
BC Sports Hall of Fame Recipient, Teacher
Roy E. Radu is a former Canadian national rugby player of Romanian descent who proudly represented Canada as a flanker in the 1987 and 1991 Rugby World Cups. With a lifelong passion for sport and youth development, Roy brings his leadership and experience to MEND Canada to help break down barriers for Indigenous youth in athletics.
A decorated athlete, Roy was awarded the Bobby Gaul Memorial Trophy from the University of British Columbia for his outstanding leadership and sportsmanship. His contributions to Canadian rugby were further recognized in 2018 when he was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame as a member of Canada’s historic 1991 Rugby World Cup team.
Beyond his rugby career, Roy has dedicated himself to education and community service. As a teacher at Claremont Secondary School (1988-2003), he was passionate about student engagement, particularly in extracurricular activities. He coached and sponsored numerous school sports and outdoor pursuits, including rugby, wrestling, badminton, table tennis, canoeing, backpacking, and mountaineering. His dedication to mentorship and athletics has left a lasting impact on countless students.
Following his teaching career, Roy served as a police officer with the Saanich Police Department (2003-2016). One of his most rewarding assignments was a three-year term on the bike (mountain) squad, where he worked closely with vulnerable populations, including those experiencing homelessness. This role reinforced his deep commitment to community service and providing support to those in need.
As a MEND Canada board member, Roy is dedicated to ensuring that all youth—regardless of background—have access to the life-changing benefits of sport. He firmly believes in the power of athletics to instill discipline, teamwork, resilience, and confidence, and he is committed to creating opportunities for Indigenous youth to thrive both on and off the field.
