Any child over the age of 6 MUST be registered in school
Proof of age (i.e., birth certificate)
Status card, or
Letter of support from their community, or
Other means to support proof of Indigeneity (acceptance at the discretion of the selection committee).
MEND Canada will work with Indigenous governing bodies for verification of age and status.
Children and youth who live both on and off reserve are eligible.
MEND Canada is pursuing a community-by-community approach, making connections with Elders, leadership, and parents in various Indigenous communities initially in Western Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan).
Once the program is established, MEND Canada will expand participation to all Indigenous children and youth in Canada. MEND Canada is mostly delivered online (i.e., application for funding). However, some components like meeting with community Leadership and other community representatives, including recreation and education directors may occur in person, in community.
Indigenous children wishing to participate in the program must have a parent or legal guardian fill out the
MEND Canada application. Upon verification of status, the next steps link and approval letter will be sent to the parent or guardian who completed the application (monies are subject to availability within each community).
The application process is continuous. Applications should be submitted before the start of the program, ideally at least 8 weeks (2 months) before fees payment. Applications submitted later may not be approved before funding is required.
